Dorothea Deitz Endowed Memorial Scholarship

The Dorothea Deitz Endowed Memorial Scholarship is officially open. The deadline to apply is May 31, 2019.


The Dorothea Deitz Endowed Memorial Scholarship was established in 2015 by the Dorothea Deitz Memorial Scholarship Fund Board of Trustees to encourage young women in New York to pursue careers in the physical education teaching profession. This scholarship is a memorial to Dorothea Deitz, an outstanding teacher, supervisor and director of physical education for many years in Schenectady and Long Island.

Scholarship Administration

The Dorothea Deitz Memorial Scholarship is administered by the Women’s Sports Foundation and is replenished through earnings on the endowment.


Students who meet the requirements below are eligible to apply:
a) New York State female high school graduating senior.
b) Demonstrated financial need
c) Academic achievement, minimum GPA of 3.0 or equivalent.
d) Evidence of character, physical education competence, participation in athletics, qualities of leadership, and community service.
e) Intending to major in Physical Education.

Application Procedure

You must submit an online application by 5 p.m. EST on May 31, 2019. You must visit Foundant GLM, the Women’s Sports Foundation’s grant-management system, and follow the directions to register a new user profile. Once your profile is registered, you will be able to save and submit an application on the website. APPLY HERE

Under the organization information, please enter the information for your high school contact. A Tax ID number is not required to register (so you may leave that space blank).

You must attach each of the following required items to your online application where indicated: 1) official high school academic transcript; and 2) three (3) letters of recommendations from individuals who are familiar with your abilities such as a coach or teacher. The letters should address your athletic participation, potential to become a Physical Education teacher and chance for success in a college Physical Education program. The letter should also speak to your character and personality. The author of the letter should indicate his/her relationship with you and how long they have known you. Letters must be dated and signed and must be attached to the online application; letters mailed separately will not be accepted.

Notification of Application Acceptance

You will receive notification from the Foundation via e-mail when your application has been received.

Conditions under which an application WILL NOT be accepted include:
1) Any application submitted AFTER the due date OR submitted by mail, fax or e-mail.
2) Any application missing a letter of recommendation and/or transcript.
3) Any application that includes additional materials attached (photos, writing samples, etc.), which are prohibited.

Scholarship Awards

This scholarship is intended to fund a minimum scholarship of $1,000 per year, per recipient. It is anticipated that there will be up to nine awards. The scholarship will be limited to full-time, incoming freshmen women; it is non-renewable.
