Each year, we ask a group of athletes to take part in a structured level of involvement with the Foundation through our Athlete Advisory Panel. Those selected have demonstrated support for the Foundation’s mission and the desire to do whatever they can to help young girls and their fellow female athletes. Where would we be without sports? Through our new grant initiative with espnW, Sports 4 Life, we are taking steps to ensure that widely underserved communities of girls never have to answer that question. We hosted Olympic gold medal-winning athletes Angela Hucles, Jessica Mendoza and Brenda Villa and 2015 Sports 4 Life grantee organizations, PowerPlay NYC and Woodcraft Rangers, for a Tweet Chat to discuss the dire importance of recruiting and retaining girls of color in youth sports. Just months ahead of ski jumping’s Olympic debut for women, Lindsey Van and Alissa Johnson, both WSF Travel & Training grantees, have been named to the 2014 U.S. National Team. Van and Johnson join seven other jumpers on the team that will represent the U.S during this season’s World Cup and Continental Cup circuits.
Emily Cook, a two-time Olympic skier and six-time National Champion from Belmont, Massachusetts, has dealt with her fair share of adversity. After qualifying for the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, Emily suffered a devastating injury that left her wheel-chair bound for several weeks. She persevered, returning to compete in the winter of 2005, reaching her Olympic dream in 2006 in Italy and the Vancouver Olympics in 2010. Next January, Emily will compete for her third consecutive Team USA berth. Just months away from her go at long-chased gold, we caught up with Emily to talk Olympic adventures, overcoming adversity and what the Women’s Sports Foundation means to her.
