New SHARP Center “Women in the Olympic and Paralympic Games” Report Reveals Equity Gaps in Participation, Leadership Opportunities for Women

Women still have not exceeded 45 percent of the total participants in the Olympic Games and 36 percent in the Paralympic Games; however, in the 2012 London Games, for the first time in history, women made up more than half of Team USA.

The Sport, Health and Activity Research and Policy (SHARP) Center for Women and Girls, a Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF) and University of Michigan collaboration, has released the results of “Women in the Olympic and Paralympic Games: An Analysis of Participation and Leadership Opportunities,” a study that provides new insights into the generally poor representation of women in leadership roles and sports participation in the international and U.S. Olympic and Paralympic organizations. Champion Women Athletes To Visit Capitol Hill in Support of 27th Annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day

In celebration of the 27th annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD), Winter X Games champion Grete Eliassen (Skiing Slopestyle) and 2012 Olympic gold medalist Esther Lofgren (Rowing) will join sister Olympians Sarah Hughes (Figure Skating) and Nancy Hogshead-Makar (Swimming), and National Champion Lillian Greene-Chamberlain (Track & Field), to meet with Congressional leaders on Capitol Hill to press for increased athletic opportunities nationwide for girls and women. The Women’s Sports Foundation’s ‘Travel & Training Fund’ Awards $100,000 to Aspiring Women Athletes

The Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF) announced its 2012 Travel & Training Fund awarding $100,000 to 23 individual athletes and three teams representing 18 sports. Gymnast Gabrielle “Gabby” Douglas, who is among the twenty-six new Travel & Training Fund recipients, has decided to donate her grant back to WSF to help fuel the dreams of another aspiring athlete. While girls’ share of high school athletic participation opportunities increased between 1993-1994 and 1999-2000, progress toward gender equity slowed and, perhaps, even reversed direction during the 2000s, a newly released report by the Sport, Health and Activity Research and Policy Center for Women and Girls (SHARP Center), indicated.
