A Letter from Jackie: Sports 4 Life Community Spotlight

Sports 4 Life community partner, Woodcraft Rangers, provides positive academic and sports-based youth development in Los Angeles, Calif. As part of its commitment to health and fitness, the Woodcraft Rangers Girls’ Sport program currently supports 1,200 girls ages 11 to 18, and provides daily sport activities 5 days a week, up to 2 hours a day.

Woodcraft Rangers serves a diverse population in the LA area and works closely with Title I schools, which have high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families. It offers programming free of charge to youth and their families. Plus there are no tryouts — every girl that has a desire to play is welcome.

The Sports 4 Life funding provided by the Women’s Sports Foundation and its partner, espnW, is enabling Woodcraft Rangers to expand its programming to reach 300 more girls. The support is also providing for new equipment, uniforms and transportation to off-site sport tournaments and clinics.

Jackie is a 16-year softball participant in Woodcraft Rangers Girls’ Sport program. We were delighted to receive this letter from development manager Ruben Longoria and to hear about the impact of sports in Jackie’s life.

Jackie’s Letter to WSF

As a kid who deals with anxiety and a troubled home, sports has been one of my biggest stress relievers. It has transformed me to do amazing in my academic and social life. When I’m on the field I can see my improved attitude, I’m relaxed and comfortable not only with my team but with myself.

My most memorable experience playing will always be the bus rides home after a big win. I bring energy and support to the team and you can just notice the love and passion we all have for both the sport and each other.

One of the most important things that I have discovered about myself is how strong-minded I am. Every day I give 100% or I help coach some of the new girls. I can leave my troubles out of the game so I can focus on my improvements. No more past, all future!

Every day I give 100%…I can leave my troubles out of the game so I can focus on my improvements. No more past, all future!

My current ambition is to be valedictorian of my class. I work hard to earn straight A’s but my main goal is to go to college so I can be the first in my family to attend. I hope to be an aerospace engineer and work for SpaceX one day.

Thank you to the Women’s Sport Foundation and Woodcraft for this great opportunity.

Jackie
