America SCORES Cleveland is a Sports 4 Life Community Partner with an innovative tri-curricular approach that teaches kids how physical activity, creative expression and teamwork nurtures a strong body, mind and character. Through daily, team-based soccer and writing workshops and annual community service projects, SCORES measurably improves fitness, literacy and communications skills, and empowers kids to create change in their communities.
The Sports 4 Life funding and support provided by the Women’s Sports Foundation, and founding partner espnW, helps America SCORES fund after school programming, summer camp and other events.
Below is an account from one of the program leaders:
Imanee Henderson often found herself getting into disciplinary problems for her behavior, which her teachers say mostly stemmed from a lack of interest. Several years ago, Imanee joined the SCORES program and teachers saw an immediate impact—her behavior and attitude changed, she became more engaged in school, and started to exhibit traits of leading her classmates in positive ways. The problem was, during the times of the school year when SCORES programming was not running, her attitude and behavior reverted back to having a lack in interest and getting in trouble.
Now in the 8th grade at Mound STEM School in the Slavic Village neighborhood, Imanee has emerged as a leader among her classmates. Teachers say she has excelled in the classroom this year and being in SCORES has helped her gain discipline, confidence, and increased her work ethic. Imanee now understands that she must be a student first and an athlete second. Mr. Long, Imanee’s Physical Education teacher and SCORES Soccer Coach, said it best when he said,
Imanee is a leader on the field which has translated into her being a leader off the field and in the classroom.”
Imanee has been accepted to attend John Hay High School, Cleveland’s premier early college high school with rigorous acceptance standards.
