2011 Sportswoman of the Year: Fans Speak Out

For the past ten days, we have been conducting our yearly Sportswoman of the Year voting, where we ask the fans to choose their favorite Individual Sport and Team Sports Athletes. We received thousands of votes, and while we won’t reveal the winners until October 19 at our Annual Salute to Women in Sports, we do want to share with you some of the best Facebook comments on a handful of our 20 incredible finalists. Women’s sports fans were alive and well last week, and they definitely let their voice be heard.

More on the individual sport finalists here and team sport finalists here.

Individual Sport Finalists:

Miki Ando
Emma Clithero-Michaels: “I already loved Miki before the start of last season, but her grace and bravery even in the face of such immense tragedy was just astonishing and wonderful. I hope she’ll be recognized for her tremendous accomplishments last year.”

Missy Franklin
Adrienne Quinn Washington: “Missy is not only an outstanding swimmer, athlete, and sports ambassador – she is a remarkable young woman and a true inspiration to athletically minded girls (and boys!) everywhere. Both my 6yo daughter and 9yo son are completely taken with Missy, and this mama is thrilled that her kidlets have chosen such a worthy role model. Go Missy GO!”

Carmelita Jeter
Lorraine Weldon: “Carmelita is the excellence and charisma that USATF is known for.. AND she got the swag to go along with it…”

Elizabeth Booth: “Fantastic gymnast – best in the world for many years – such finesse and fluidity in all her work.”
