Given to a female athlete who exhibits extraordinary courage in her athletic performance, demonstrates the ability to overcome adversity, makes significant contributions to sports and serves as an inspiration and role model to those who face challenges, overcomes them and strives for success at all levels.
In recognition of media’s cultural impact and power to shape public opinion of female athletes, the Foundation created the Billie Awards in 2006.
Named for Dr. Darlene A. Kluka, full professor and Interim Dean in the School of Human Performance & Leisure Sciences at Barry University, the award was established in 2001 as our way of respecting her leadership, vision and desire to create a legacy that acknowledges the outstanding performance of researchers.
