November 2011

Travel & Training grantees dominate at recent Pan American and Parapan American competitions
The U.S. women’s water polo team, Travel & Training grantees in 2010, had a very successful Pan Am Games, earning automatic qualification for the London Games next summer. 2011 T&T recipient Carrie Johnson won the women's K1 500-meter kayak event to qualify her boat for the London Games. Another 2011 recipient, Aretha Thurmond, won silver in the discus. The Alabama native, a three-time Olympian, is on track to qualify for her fourth Games with these outstanding results in Guadalajara.

Travel & Training winners also proved their dominance at the Parapan American Games. Archer Natalie Wells, a 2011 grantee, took silver in the Individual Recurve W2 as part of a 1-2-3 American sweep. Katie Davis, 2010 T&T winner, claimed silver in the women’s +70kg judo competition. More here>>>

Travel & Training’s Anna Tunnicliffe wins sailing’s highest honor -- again
Olympic gold medalist and 2011 Travel & Training Fund winner Anna Tunnicliffe has won the women’s 2011 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year award. The award, considered to be the sport’s highest honor, has only been awarded to two other American sailors in its 17-year history. This was Tunnicliffe’s fourth nomination and second win, having been presented with the prestigious award for the first time in 2009. More here >>>

AUGUST 17, 2010: The Women’s Sports Foundation announced the return of its highly successful Travel & Training Fund – an annual grant program which provides direct financial assistance to aspiring athletes with successful competitive records who have the potential to achieve even higher performance levels and rankings.

Since 1984, we have awarded grants to more than 260 teams and 940 athletes – including figure skaters Michelle Kwan and Kristi Yamaguchi, alpine skier Picabo Street and organizations like US Rowing.
