WSF GoGirlGo! Grantee Plays Host to First Lady Michelle Obama

Wednesday, July 18, was a special day for SquashSmarts, a WSF GoGirlGo! Pennsylvania grantee. The organization had the honor of hosting United States First Lady Michelle Obama at the Lenfest Center in Philadelphia in order to raise awareness for her “Let’s Move!” youth health and fitness initiative.

Similarly to our GoGirlGo! program, “Let’s Move!” provides urban youth with means to get active in attempt to prevent childhood obesity and promote healthy lifestyles. Michelle Obama’s mission closely echoes the sentiments of SquashSmarts, an afterschool program that provides urban youth in Philadelphia a chance to enjoy the sport of squash and reap the benefits of academic tutoring.

The event was a great success and raised awareness on the importance of staying active, as well as the importance of the national squash and education movement. In the words of one Squash Smarts sixth grader, hosting the First Lady “was the most exciting event SquashSmarts has ever had!”

Said Dana Bernard Sanders, Development Director at SquashSmarts, “The Women’s Sports Foundation has seen something special in SquashSmarts and our kids, and the First Lady does too. You have been an integral part of our students’ successes over the years and we are truly grateful for your trust in our ability to make a difference in the lives of Philadelphia’s youth."

A Healthy Education

It’s an obvious truth that you only have to look at an elementary school playground for living proof that childhood obesity is on the rise. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years among the six- to 19-year-old population. We created our award-winning GoGirlGo! curriculum to get girls moving and help to fight this alarming statistic, but there are a myraid other programs out there that are worth exploring if GoGirlGo! is not available in your community.

We Need More Physical Education

We’ve heard it all before: the obesity rate in the United States is an upward trend—and the inadequate physical education across this country does not help. While there are no national requirements for physical education, the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) recommends 150 minutes of instructional physical education for elementary school children and 225 minutes for middle and high school students per week for the entire school year.

Spotlight On: Students Run Philly Style, 2012 GoGirlGo! Grant Winner

Students Run Philly Style is the only program in Philadelphia that offers marathon training to help youth succeed in life. They do this by connecting students with adult mentors who help them accomplish goals beyond what they ever imagined, including the completion of a marathon. Since 2004, Students Run Philly Style has served over 2500 students, half of them girls, from neighborhoods across Philadelphia. In 2012, we awarded Students Run Philly Style with a GoGirlGo! grant to expand their program and reach more girls than ever.
