Girls Only - Special Programming for Girls and Women in Sport: The Foundation Position

Content Summary

Education is the most effective way of remedying discrimination. Thus, National Girls and Women in Sports Day is not just a day to celebrate the achievements of women in sports to the exclusion of the achievement of male athletes. It is a day where males and females focus on (1) the importance of remedying past discrimination against women in sports, (2) the benefits of sports participation for girls, and (3) addressing the myths that have kept both boys and girls from supporting girls' sports participation; myths like "throws like a girl", girls who play sports are lesbians, girls who do gymnastics get eating disorders, etc.

Participation of Intersex Athletes in Women's Sports

Intersex athletes are vulnerable to exclusion from women’s sports, as well as ridicule and invasion of privacy. We believe that women with intersex conditions have the same rights to participation in athletics as all women.

Male Practice Players on Female Teams

The regular use of male practice players may take practice and participation opportunities away from female athletes on varsity teams. Did you know that the regular use of male practice players may be a Title IX violation?

Issues Related to Pregnancy & Athletic Participation

Policies concerning pregnancy and sport should protect both the health and rights of female athletes to participate in sports and physical activity.
