Athlete Advisory Panel

Shawn Johnson: American Wondergirl

Her performance was one of the most memorable of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. With a buoyant spirit and knack for virtual perfection across disciplines, America fell in love with Shawn Johnson. She has now earned something that no other American female gymnast ever has: the Sullivan Award. The award honors the country’s top amateur athlete. Johnson earned the award over teammate Nastia Liukin, U.S. Olympic men’s 400-meter freestyle relay swim team, volleyball player Cynthia Barboza of Stanford, and North Carolina basketball player Tyler Hansbrough. Johnson is just the third gymnast to win the Sullivan after Paul Hamm and Kurt Thomas and is only the second U.S. gymnast to win an Olympic gold medal on balance beam.
Stacey Nuveman: No Dream Too Big

Softball has been cut from the 2012 Olympic ticket. The pressure is on this two-time Olympic champion to lead the team to another golden performance.

One of the questions that we get asked most often by athletes is, “How can I be more involved? What more can I do to help?” The Athlete Advisory Panel was created to be the answer to that question. This year we asked a small a group of athletes to take part in this new structured level of involvement with the Foundation. They will be the face and voice of the Foundation on a daily basis by promoting the Foundation’s mission, attending our events and spreading the word about us to fellow athletes, their sponsors and fans. Most importantly, they are the eyes and ears for all female athletes, telling us what work needs to be done for female athletes and giving us insight into how we can continue to help.

The Foundation’s President, Jessica Mendoza, and Past President, Aimee Mullins, are the co-chairs of the Panel and are here to lead this amazing group of female athletes and more importantly people. The athletes that were chosen to be part of the Athlete Advisory Panel are female athletes that have demonstrated repeatedly their support for the Foundation’s mission and their eagerness and desire to do what ever they can to help young girls and fellow female athletes.
