Modern Pentathlon
The modern pentathlon was made an Olympic sport as early as 1912, but women were not welcome. In fact, women were not allowed in until the 2000 Olympic Games. Modern pentathlon is a five-event sport that includes the following: (1) air pistol shooting firing 20 shots at 10 meters, (2) epee fencing a pentathlete must fence every contestant using an electric epee sword, (3) swimming 200-meter freestyle, (4) riding 15 obstacles over a 400-meter course, where each rider picks her horse through a draw and has only 20 minutes to familiarize themselves with the horse before competition, (5) a 3,000-meter run.
