Curling
Curling has only been approved as an Olympic medal sport since 1992. However, the sport dates back to the 18th century when Scottish farmers curled on frozen marshes with channel stones. Curling is a team game, where the actions of all four members dictate the outcome of each shot. Two opposing teams compete in 8 or 10 ends (similar to an inning in the sport of baseball). Team members take turns delivering the stones across an ice surface toward a targeted scoring area (the house-a 12 foot circle). The team with the stone closest to the center of the house wins the highest amount of points for that end. The rock, or stone, is controlled by the shooter's aim, weight (velocity in the delivery) and giving it the correct handle, or curl. Team members sprint along the path of the rock and sweep (with curling brooms) to control the curl and speed. After 10 ends, the highest scoring team wins.
