Athletics (Track & Field)
The term athletics has several different connotations. However, the one true and official sport classified as athletics is track and field. Track and field offers a variety of opportunities for athletes by encompassing a variety of competitions - some that demand incredible strength, others that demand speed or endurance. Athletes of all ages, shapes and sizes compete in the following events: 100-, 200-, 400-, 800-, 1,500-, 3,000-, 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs; the marathon; high jump; long jump; triple jump; shot put; discus and hammer throws; pole vault; steeplechase; 100- and 400-meter hurdles; 10,000-meter walk; heptathlon; and 400- and 1,600-meter relays.
