GIRLS EARN MONEY FOR PLAYING AND LEADING
Women’s Sports Foundation and Gatorade to distribute $50,000 in Grants to High School Teams
NEW YORK (March 10, 2009) – The Women’s Sports Foundation will give a total of $50,000 to girls’ teams through its GoGirlGo! Ambassador Team Awards championed by Gatorade. Aside from the obvious physical benefits, girls also learn leadership skills from team sports, often becoming role models for their peers. With that in mind, the Foundation will award 20 $2,500 grants, as well as a Gatorade Hydration Package, to teams that lead the way for more girls to play sports. Grants may be used for uniforms, travel, equipment, tournament fees and other team expenses.
The White Knoll High School Volleyball Team earned one of the $2,500 GoGirlGo! Ambassador Team Award in 2008 after creating volleyball clinics that reached 76 first- through eighth-grade girls. “We try to help girls make their way to becoming female sports stars,” said the team’s captain.
Teams are asked to plan, organize and execute a community service project that engages girls in sports and physical activity. The projects must be entered no later than July 17, 2009, and be original current work and not previously submitted to the grant program.
School, amateur, community and nonprofit-affiliated teams, whose members are females, enrolled in ninth-12th grade and residents of the United States, are welcome to enter.
