Courtney Kupets wins Honda Sports Award


ESPN.com, Wednesday, May 06, 2009 - Former Olympic medalist Courtney Kupets has won her second Honda Sports Award for as the nation’s top female college gymnast. After an Achilles injury kept her from the 2008 postseason, Kupets returned to lead Georgia to its fifth straight NCAA title. The senior became the first gymnast to win a national title in the all-around, bars, beam and floor competition in the same year. Kupets also won the silver medal in the team all-around and captured individual bronze in the uneven bars at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

Kupets is also an academic standout at Georgia. She was named to the Fall Semester Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and was chosen as Georgia’s recipient of the Boyd McWhorter Scholarship. In addition, she won UGA’s Marilyn Vincent Award as the senior female student-athlete with the highest grade point average with her 3.8 GPA.
