A three-time U.S. National Champion and the first American to win the all-around title at the World Championships (1991), Zmeskal qualified for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain and led her team to a bronze medal performance in team competition. She also became two-time 1992 World Champion (on balance beam and floor exercise), becoming the only competitor to win more than one event at the competition. Zmeskal was chosen the 1992 Athlete of the Year by her national teammates, named as 1991 Spor5tsWoman of the Year by the USOC, and was also selected as the March of Dimes 1991 Athlete of the Year. In 1990, she was a recipient of the Women's Sports Foundation's “Up and Coming Athlete” award. A National Team member from 1990 to 1993, she announced her comeback to gymnastics in May of 1994, however failed to qualify for the U.S. National Team. (5/97)
