Tara Van Derveer/ Basketball

Van Derveer is one of basketball's most accomplished coaches. She has coached the U.S.A. basketball team eight times, compiling 88 wins and eight losses. Van Derveer coached her teams to the gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and the 1994 Goodwill Games. She was name the 1996 U.S.A. Basketball and U.S. Olympic Committee Coach of the Year.

As the coach of Stanford University's women's basketball team, Van Derveer led the team to five Final Four appearances and two titles (1990 and 1992). She has earned Coach of the Year honors from the Pac-10 three times (1989, 1990, and 1995), the Northern California Women's Intercollegiate Coach of the Year five times (1988, 1989, 1990, 1992 and 1993) and the National Coach of the Year three-times (1988, 1989 and 1990).

Van Derveer started her career as a head coach at the University of Idaho in 1978. Two years later she moved on to become the head coach at Ohio State University. While in the Big 10 Conference, she led the Buckeyes to four league championships (1983-87) and was named the Coach of the Year twice (1984 and 1985).

While in college, Van Derveer played for the University of Indiana. She was their starting guard for three years and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1995. During her 18 years of coaching, Van Derveer has compiled a 437-115 overall record (.792). (10/98)
