Began Nordic skiing at the age of seven. She earned a spot on her first national team in 1985, making her one of the most experienced team members. She has been a member of five World Championship teams.
Smith placed 21st in Albertville in 1992, the first time women's biathlon was introduced to the Olympic medal program. Smith's finish was the top American finish. In the 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer, she tied the best U.S. Olympic finish by placing 14th in the 15k and finished 24th in the sprint event. She was the USA's top woman in the 7.5 and 15 km events.
Smith was named the 1994 female Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Biathlon Association and the USOC. Her athletic background also includes competitive soccer, track, nordic skiing and golf. (6/95)
