Shannon Miller/ Gymnastics

Shannon Miller reigns as the most decorated male or female American gymnast, having won more Olympic and world championship honors than any other U.S. gymnast. She gained notoriety globally when she earned five medals at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. Miller, who credits her mother for her athleticism, has earned seven Olympic medals — two silver (1992), three bronze (1992) and two gold (1996) — and nine world championship medals (1991, 1993-1995).

Miller started her career in 1982 at the age of 5 and has won an astounding 59 international and 49 national competition medals, with more than half of them being gold. At the 1996 Olympic Games, she finished with two gold medals and led the “Magnificent Seven” to team gold.

She was presented the Master of Sport Award, the highest honor in gymnastics, in September 1993 at the USA Gymnastics Congress. The following year at the USA Gymnastics Congress, she was named the 1994 Athlete of the Year.

Miller, who is now a member of seven Halls of Fame, was a 2008 inductee into the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame. She was also the youngest inductee into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame (2002) and is the only female to be inducted twice into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame.

Miller continues her work in sports commentary, motivational speaking and as host of “Gymnastics 360˚ with Shannon Miller” on Comcast. In 2007, Miller founded the Shannon Miller Foundation, which is dedicated to fighting childhood obesity, and was appointed co-chair of the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness by Florida Governor Charlie Crist.
