Mamie Johnson/ Baseball

Mamie Johnson began playing baseball early in South Caronlina, where she was born in 1935. During her childhood her family migrated to New Jersey where she became involved in the Police Athletic League Baseball program. In the late 1940's, Johnson moved to the Washington D.C. area where she played semi-pro with the Alexandria Allstars, and Cyprians.

Mamie “Peanut” Johnson was one of three women who played for the Negro Leagues. She is the only female player who is still living. Johnson was a player for the Indianapolis Clowns from 1953-1955. Johnson was a versatile player. She played the position of pitcher, utility, and second baseman. Within her three years, Johnson compiled thirty three wins and eight losses.

Johnson continues her involvement with the Negro Leagues as the manager of The Negro Leagues Baseball Shop in Bowie, Maryland. She also lectures and gives clinics to youth in the area. (1/00)
