Swin Cash/ Basketball

Swin Cash, a member of the 2004 USA Basketball Women's Senior National Team, was nominated for a 2004 Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly (ESPY) Award for the category of Best WNBA Player. Before the Olympic break in the WNBA season, Cash averaged 18.2 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists through the 13 games. She was also a member of the 2003 WNBA champion Detroit Shock. One of only three Detroit Shock players to start all 32 games, she averaged 14.8 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game in her rookie season. Cash also led her team in minutes played (1,079), scoring (21 times), rebounds (17 times) and assists (four times). She recorded a franchise single-season record of seven double-doubles. As the second overall draft pick for the Detroit Shock, Cash is a fighter both on and off the court. In June 2003, she was honored by the WNBA with the league's Community Assist Award, recognizing her extensive community outreach efforts. Before she was drafted by the Detroit Shock, she was a member of the award-winning University of Connecticut Huskies. Cash started all 39 games her senior year season, averaging 14.9 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists per contest. She earned 2002 Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors after leading the UCONN Huskies to an undefeated 39-0 season and second national title in three years. The 2002 Kodak All-America First Team and 2002 AP All-America Second Team member had quite a junior year season as well. Cash became the 20th player all-time at UCONN to score 1,000 career points. She started in 33 of the 35 games she appeared in her junior season, averaging 12.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per contest while leading UCONN to the 2001 Final Four and earning a spot on the 2001 All-Big East Second Team. As a sophomore, she won her first career national title while averaging 9.9 points and 5.3 rebounds and earning All-Big East Third Team honors. Though Cash was only a freshman in 1999, she scored in double figures in 12 games while impressively averaging 15.1 minutes, 9.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. (8/04)
