Girls Sports Matter: 10 Ways You Can Make a Difference

Sports involvement needs to be nurtured and encouraged in every girl. And there are many ways to actively support women's sports, both locally and nationally. Here are 10 ideas to get you started.

  1. Take your friends and family to women's high school, college or professional sports events. It's especially important for young boys to attend so they can grow up know that women are good athletes and that they learn to respect a woman's ability to play.

  2. Sign up you daughter or little sister to play on a team. Send her to a sports clinic or, better yet, to a sports camp.

  3. Make the history of women in sports come alive. Read from books about female athletes for your child's bedtime stories.

  4. At gift-giving time, think about sports-related presents for the young girls you know. Whether she's your daughter, younger sister, cousin, niece or even a neighbor, why not buy her a basketball, a glove, skates or a tennis racket? Giving equipment that allow her to get involved in sports is good way tell a girl that she can be an athlete.

  5. Have your daughter pick her favorite women's team and follow them with her throughout the season. Check out the team's web site regularly. (No excuses about women's games not being shown on TV!)

  6. Help start up a girls' team. Begin by discussing the idea with your school's athletic director or physical education teacher. Would the school fund the team (remember Title IX's requirements)? Or you can always go to your town or city recreation department. And you can also recruit players, post up flyers, or get a sign up sheet going.

  7. Does your high school or college have a women's sports booster club? Send them a donation--make it an annual commitment.

  8. Do you have moneymaking skills? If you have the know-how to bring in the dollars that can support a team, go for it. And even if you're not a high-finance person, you can still learn to organize fundraisers.

  9. Support your favorite women's collegiate or professional sports team by purchasing their merchandise such as t-shirts, caps and sweatshirts.

  10. Learn which companies are the financial backers of women's sport leagues. Buy their products or use their services, then send a letter of appreciation to let them know why.
