Top 10 Ways to Motivate Girls to Become Physically Active!

Published: May 20, 2004

The latest research from the CDC shows us that girls who are physically active are less likely to engage in risky behaviors, including smoking, alcohol and drug use and risky sexual activity. A girl who exercises every day is less likely to get cancer and less likely to develop heart disease as an adult.

Girls need to build physical activity into their lives. They need to decide that being physically active is important and worth the time and effort to keep at it. You can help. Here are some ways to motivate girls to be physically active:

1.  Keep it fun! Activities should be do-able but challenging. She should be learning something new, and get to do it with friends.

2.   Let her know what it's all about - that she can do it, that it will make her feel stronger, more flexible and have more energy; that it will make her feel good about herself.

3.  Have a plan
  • Write down goals
  • Keep a fitness calendar
  • Keep an athletic journal to track progress

4.  Keep the activity level moderate—not too easy, not too hard. Make it a regular part of daily life.

5.  Mix it up. Do a variety of activities that work the heart and lungs, stretch the muscles and strengthen the bones.

6.  Help break through the barriers.
  • Help her look for good, safe, convenient programs.
  • Go with her.
  • Encourage her friends to join in.
  • Help her schedule the time to be active.
  • Let her know that it's okay to sweat, it's cool to be athletic.

7.  Give her choices, but let her make some decisions.

8.  Praise and reward her efforts. A smile, a nod of the head, some kind words of encouragement can be powerful. Give some fun rewards.

9.  Don't just tell her –show her—be active together. Set a good example. Become exercise buddies. You can challenge and encourage each other

10.  Keep it fun!
