The Health of Today's Young Girls is Threatened by Inactivity

Too many girls are not physically or psychologically healthy, happy or confident about themselves. These girls are in grave danger…and they need our help.

  • One in every six girls is obese or overweight; and overweight women are 60% more likely to die from breast cancer
  • One in three girls gets pregnant by the age of 20
  • One in three girls in grades 9-12 smokes; lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women
  • One in three adolescent girls will experience depression, anxiety or eating disorders
  • One in four high school girls reports she does not like herself; 78% of 12th grade girls are unhappy with their bodies
  • One in four girls is sexually assaulted by the age of 18; four out of five 8-11 year-old girls have been sexually harassed in school
  • Girls aged 4-19 have significantly higher “bad” cholesterol levels than boys; heart disease is the #1 cause of death among American women

Women's Sports Foundation research and numerous other research studies point to physical activity as a fundamental solution to the serious and unique health and social problems faced by girls today.

Regular participation in physical activity during childhood and adolescence promotes the development of a positive body image, confidence, and self-esteem and has proven to improve academic performance and career success. Physical activity also reduces a girl's health risks for:

  • obesity or being overweight
  • heart disease
  • osteoporosis
  • disordered eatingor pathogenic dietary behaviors
  • alcohol, tobacco and illicit drug use
  • physical or sexual abuse
  • cancer, including breast cancer
  • unintended teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases*

YOU CAN HELP CHANGE THE LIVES OF 1 MILLION GIRLS … ONE GIRL AT A TIME

JOIN THE GoGirlGo! MOVEMENT

MAKE A DIFFERENCE

What is the GoGirlGo! Movement?
GoGirlGo! aims to increase physical activity for girls ages 8-18, with a goal of reaching 1 million girls in three years. How? … through education, awareness, grants to provide equipment and leadership, program development and your help! We need you to help get girls active and keep them moving – because the future of America's young girls is in jeopardy. And YOU can make a significant difference. It's simple, and your efforts will last a lifetime!

Here are four simple ways how you can help:

1. Take the Pledge!
There is no more true way to actualize the GoGirlGo! Movement than to make a pledge to get a girl moving. Girls need more mentors and motivators to teach them the ropes of an active lifestyle. It doesn't take much – a little time, a little heart and a sincere interest in making a difference. We'll help you learn how! Go to GoGirlGo.com or simply fill out the attached pledge card – and ask a friend to join you in helping girls become more active. GoGirlGo.com also has some suggested activities if you need some ideas on how to get started.

2. Support the Movement!
Your support will stop girls from dropping out of sports and motivate girls who are not active to get going! Your contributions can help provide the necessary sports and fitness equipment and important adult leadership that are needed for many of these girls to participate in physical activity. For as little as $20, you can provide an opportunity for a disadvantaged girl to play.

4. Become a Corporate Partner!
Your corporation can play an important role in fighting the alarming inactivity rate among young girls and become an important partner in the GoGirlGo! Movement. Invest in your future workforce! Eighty percent of female executives in Fortune 500 companies played sports. It's where girls learn to be competitive and confident. Team up with your co-workers for this great community service activity; match the contributions of your employees; or become a supporting sponsor. Log onto to our Web site to find out more details on corporate participation in the GoGirlGo! Movement.

What will your support do?
100% of your donation supports the Women's Sports Foundation's efforts to get and keep girls physically active. Half of all monies donated go directly to your local girls' sports and fitness programs as cash grants – ensuring that girls in your area have a chance to play and start learning the value of exercise, fitness and teamwork at an early age. The other 50% supports Women's Sports Foundation education and outreach programs that serve your community as well as communities nationwide, to ensure that all girls and women will understand the benefits of physical activity and know how they can get girls active.
