GoGirlGo! San Antonio Presents to Local Community Organizations

Earlier this summer GoGirlGo! San Antonio had the pleasure to present to several local organizations who were hosting their summer programs and day events where a majority of their audiences were girls. Some of these organizations included Trinity University, Martinez Street Women’s Center, and the Dawson Community Center. Programs ranged from fun day trips to some of San Antonio’s most frequented parks to special appearances by some of the areas most prominent athletes like professional motorcycle drag racer Peggy Llewellyn.

Trinity University Basketball Camp
Trinity University’s head women’s basketball coach, Aime Bradley, took advantage of the GoGirlGo! two-time national award-winning educational curriculum, passing it out to approximately 30 girls attending one of her summer basketball camps the week of June 16-20. On June 19, GoGirlGo! San Antonio was invited by Bradley to attend and present to the girls. GoGirlGo! San Antonio was also afforded the opportunity to staff a table at Trinity’s summer basketball camp parent-demonstration games.

This event was mainly a showcase for the boys and girls to show off to their parents some of their newly acquired skills, drills and important life lessons learned while attending camp. In addition to speaking to the girls and about 60 parents, GoGirlGo! San Antonio staff was able to spend the day passing out GoGirlGo! temporary tattoos and GoGirlGo! literature, including the ever-popular GoGirlGo! scrapbooks, used by the girls throughout their week at camp. GoGirlGo! San Antonio was invited back for a similar camp at Trinity University on June 26 and was able to present to an additional 60-plus girls and more than 100 parents.

We are excited about our new partnership with Coach Aime Bradley and Trinity University and look forward to our future collaborations.

Martinez Street Women’s Center—GoGirlGo! in the Park
On June 25, GoGirlGo! San Antonio had the opportunity to speak to 30 girls involved in the GoGirlGo! program at the Martinez Street Women’s Center summer camp. On a hot summer day, they gathered under a gazebo at San Pedro Park, where the girls heard from GoGirlGo! San Antonio intern Candace McKinley who talked about the GoGirlGo! program. The girls also listened to inspirational words and about Candaces’ experiences running track in college, benefits of being active and earning a scholarship to go to college.

The girls were rewarded with GoGirlGo! pedometers and were told the huge benefits of counting their steps before being led on a walking program around the park. Before cooling off and going swimming in the park’s pool, the girls excitedly walked away with goodie bags, GoGirlGo! scrapbooks and GoGirlGo! temporary tattoos.

Dawson Community Center—GoGirlGo! San Antonio Program Kick-Off
GoGirlGo! San Antonio was invited to help welcome the girls at Dawson Community Center on July 7 as they kicked off their summer GoGirlGo! program. The girls were presented an overview of the GoGirlGo! program before the reins were handed over to professional motorcycle drag racer Peggy Llewellyn. Peggy talked about her career as a drag racer and how she got to be where she is today. She further discussed what the sport has done for her and the valuable lessons it has taught her throughout her career as well as the many benefits of being and staying active. Peggy shared a clip previously aired on ESPN from February 2008 that highlighted her career and her accomplishments. The girls were mesmerized by her presence and by the fact that they were able to see and touch one of her trophies that she brought and passed around for the girls to see. An added treat for the girls was an autograph session provided by Llewellyn where she autographed pictures and literature. Some even had the opportunity to pose with her and the trophy for pictures! The girls ended the session by receiving various prizes, pedometers and GoGirlGo! temporary tattoos.
