On June 18, GoGirlGo! San Antonio held its quarterly Leadership Conference at the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas’ new facility. The Girl Scouts were gracious enough to host the group at its new state-of-the-art location on Coker Loop. There were approximately 40 program leaders, coaches, directors and community organization representatives in attendance for the conference. Along with an enjoyable, free breakfast, all participants took part in several interactive icebreakers for the first part of the morning to meet and get to know one another. New bonds and lasting relationships were formed as they networked amongst each other and familiarized themselves with each other’s community agency.

The highlights of the conference were the two main workshops: GoGirlGo! San Antonio Program Best Practices and the GoGirlGo! Grantee Workshop. The Best Practices workshop included presentations by three highlighted community organizations: Family Service Association, The First Tee of San Antonio and Gilbert Elementary School Mustang Cheerleaders. The organizations shared their success stories, how they recruited girls to their program, and tips for others on how to implement a successful GoGirlGo! San Antonio program.

The First Tee presentation involved everyone going outside and a creative and interactive approach. The attendees observed several volunteers as they went through various putting stations and demonstrated how they incorporated tips on physical activity, life skills and motivational pearls into the game making it a learning but fun game. Jeannie O’Donnell from the First Tee did an excellent job helping and encouraging others to think creatively and “outside the box” when devising games or lessons for the girls.

The Mustang Cheerleaders shared an empowering PowerPoint presentation of all the various activities/events their girls had participated in through the GoGirlGo! San Antonio program during the last six months. The oral presentation conveyed how the program helped their girls evolve both inwardly and outwardly through physical activity combined with lessons that taught and encouraged positive attitudes and better self-esteem. They even shared heartfelt success stories on how many of the girls changed over time as a result of using the GoGirlGo! San Antonio program.

The Family Service Association discussed its focus on healthy eating habits for girls and how it’s expanded its GoGirlGo! program to include a journal writing session provided by the GoGirlGo! San Antonio curriculum. The Association also incorporated physical activity into the program by rotating every week to a different sport like soccer, volleyball and basketball in an effort to help keep the girls motivated and moving.

The Grantee Workshop reviewed how the program worked and outlined the requirements of being a new grantee and participant of the GoGirlGo! San Antonio program.
