Ambassador Program at Work

Learn about the Ambassador program through the girls who've done it!

Boston Ambassador Alexandra Bakovic

Who am I?
I was born in Bolivia and came to live in the U.S. when I was 16 years old. In Bolivia I trained gymnastics and was in the competitive team. Sadly when I came  here I stopped doing gymnastics, but I got involved in other sports like track and Dance. I have a passion for sports and I want to study athletic training.

Why I became an Ambassador?
In school we have a “class” that is called Senior Project, this is an internship where for the last quarter of classes we work instead of going to school. Looking at what GoGirlGo! does I realize that it would be the perfect project for me. Once my involvement in sports grew I learned how to manage my time and started doing better at school. If it wasn’t because of sports I wouldn’t have the confidence that I have in myself and wouldn’t think that I am able to do whatever I put myself up to. When I found out about GoGirlGo! I realized that I had the option to help other younger girls to have a similar experience than I did. There was no question to whether I wanted to do this project or not. I knew this was the perfect thing for me to work on.

What was the challenge and how I handled it?
A big challenge that I encountered was that when we were going to do the activities some girls didn’t want to do them. They thought that they were boring or they said they were tired. So it was a big challenge to try to get them all excited about something, however in the end the ones who seemed not to like it would come up to me and would tell me they were having fun. So then I knew that I wasn’t doing that bad. I did realize that the funner the activity, the more they want to do it!

What was the best part?
In this whole experience I learned a lot of things that before I could have never imagined or things that I knew but never took them into account. I always knew that it was important to be confident with one self. However I never realized that it is something people have to work on and it wasn’t something some people knew since the day they were born. Through the stories that I read to the little girls I reinforced my belief that we are all the same, no matter the color the size or the shape; it is not right to make fun of others when they are different because that could cause an internal scar that would last for life; and that sports are good, no matter if its just a walk through the park or if its involved in an intense competition, they can help a person grow better internally and externally. I learned that sitting in an office for hours isn’t the most fun thing in the world. However, if I try to be positive and do my work well and on time, time can pass by fast. I learned that working with people that have a happy and welcoming charisma can make me feel welcomed and can help a lot when it comes to decide whether I like my job or not. I learned how to send a fax, or twenty faxes at once. I not only learned big things that will improve my personality but I also learned things that I will carry on for life and will help me become a better person and a better worker.
