Program Overview
Each year the Women’s Sports Foundation provides opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to fulfill the requirements of sports management degrees or sports related business degrees through an internship at the Women’s Sports Foundation. To have an intern funded in the name of the former Chair of the Board of Trustees and former President of Cedar Crest College, Dr. Dorothy G. Blaney, would be an honor to all associated with the Foundation. The internship would offer the opportunity to celebrate and build upon the legacy of friendship, camaraderie and passion that were the cornerstones of Dorothy’s amazing leadership. As a Board member and as Chair of the Board, Dorothy’s work resulted in enhanced governance, focused strategic leadership, stronger fundraising efforts, and the fulfillment of an agreement to house the Billie Jean King International Women’s Sports Center in the National Sports Museum.

Objectives of the Dr. Dorothy G. Blaney/Billie Jean King Internship

· To provide sports management students with a broad exposure to the sports industry in general and, more specifically, to issues, opportunities and programming related to women’s sports and physical activity;

· To provide a professional work experience to college students interested in pursuing sport-related careers;

· To provide interns with access to valuable future employer contacts and assistance in determining personal career goals; and,

· To provide the Foundation, an internationally recognized 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit organization, with talented, ambitious and knowledgeable individuals to assist in the implementation of our advocacy, communications, development, education and grant programs.

Criteria for Selection

Interns apply and are judged on their academic credentials, must commit to the Foundation for a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 1 year, and are expected to work from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Interns would receive a minimum stipend of $800/month. Those interns who receive funding via a named donor fund provide an annual letter to appropriate donors to update them on their participation in the program and the work of the Foundation.

Intern Responsibilities

Half of the intern’s day is spent in the Foundation’s Information Referral Service answering the toll-free phone line, responding to information requests, and referring people to other sources for information. The purpose of this experience is to expose each intern to the breadth of the sports industry and the cross disciplinary nature of sports. With each 6 month ‘intern class’, there are 14 -18 interns. The Dr. Dorothy G. Blaney/Billie Jean King intern would be the intern selected to work with the Chief Programming and Planning Officer on special educational projects including the Billie Jean King International Women’s Sports Center. This is an appropriate and fitting educational opportunity for the Dr. Dorothy G. Blaney/Billie Jean King intern as this will allow her/him to comprehend and understand the magnitude of Dorothy and Billie Jean’s contribution to the Foundation, women’s sports and society.

Promotion of the Dr. Dorothy G. Blaney/Billie Jean King Internship

The Dr. Dorothy G. Blaney/Billie Jean King Internship will be advertised through the Foundation's Web site, and the Foundation’s web partners If desired, the internship availability can be made known to the Cedar Crest College community so a deserving student there may apply.

Demonstrated Success of Internship Program

Over the past 25 years of the internship program, more than 450 students from over 300 universities have been afforded the internship experience and gone on to sports industry positions. The program is competitive with more than 225 applicants seeking to fill 15-18 places for each 6 month period.

Gift Contribution

A minimum contribution of $40,000 per year for three years is required to establish a named program for a three-year term. A one-time minimum endowment contribution of $50,000 (may be part of estate planned gift) is required to establish the named internship in perpetuity.

As of December 2007, family, friends and Women’s Sports Foundation staff have donated outright gifts of $25,000 to the fund in salute of the Dorothy Blaney/Billie Jean King Internship.
