2005 Annual Report Message
from Billie Jean King

"We will continue to fight for her right to exercise, and now we will work even harder to get her to exercise those rights."
-Billie Jean King, Women's Sports Foundation Founder

Dear friend of the Women's Sports Foundation,

We are sisters and daughters; brothers and sons. Some are field athletes, others boardroom jockeys. Some were born when women got the right to vote; others of us born to defend a woman's rights.

Some have won Emmys and Oscars. Others have won gold medals and arguments. Some make their arguments in the court; others make their arguments on the court.

Some of us are captains of industry, others captains of ships. Some get 10s flipping their bodies with twists; others flipping a phrase with a twist.

We all have real ambitions. We have given to the Women's Sports Foundation and gotten involved to make a difference. We are all quite different, but have somehow all come to believe that girls can play, have the right to play, should play and must play. Research supports our instincts. Girls who participate in sports and physical activity are at lower risk for all of the following:
  • obesity or being overweight
  • heart disease
  • diabetes
  • osteoporosis
  • anorexia or bulimia
  • alcohol, tobacco or illicit drug use
  • cancer, including breast cancer
  • unintended pregnancy

As a board and as an organization we have committed to propel a revolution. We are a force for change and our goal is simple… to ignite 1 million girls to play. We will change behavior one girl at a time. We will continue to fight for her right to exercise, and now we will work even harder to get her to exercise those rights.

We invite the people who care about girls to continue and extend their commitment to the Women's Sports Foundation so we can make an eternal commitment to advance girls lives through sports and physical activity.

Warmly,

Billie Jean King
Honorary Chair and Founder
On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Women's Sports Foundation
