Sarah Burke

Freeskiing Superstar and Advocate

Sarah and I got introduced to the Women’s Sports Foundation about the same time. The first time I met Sarah was at the 2005 Annual Salute in New York City. Not only was it Sarah’s first Foundation event, it was also mine. She was one of the first athletes that I met and in the few months that I had been here she was also one of the first athletes I was able to introduce to the Women’s Sports Foundation. But from what I heard about Sarah before I met her, she was already living our mission all on her own. All the time while she was showing off her amazing talent in the halfpipe she was also always fighting for the progression of women’s skiing. Doing what she could to make sure that the women were included in events throughout the world and even today she continues to lead the fight for an equal prize purse as men and comparable coverage of women’s skiing.

Sarah has been involved with the Foundation for close to three years and I believe that the choice to become involved with us as an athlete, a supporter and a donor came very easily to Sarah. We were just an extension of the work she has been doing by herself all along. In the time she has been involved with us, she has attended every event she has ever been invited to, including the time she broke her thumb two days before the Ladies First Golf Classic. Or the time she missed a training day the week of a competition to attend The Billies. Over the years, she has reached out to her sponsors and fellow athletes to get them involved and to spread the word about the Foundation. And to be honest, I don’t remember a time that Sarah has said no to any request we’ve ever made of her, and that alone speaks to what a kind of person she is off her skis and how much the Foundation’s mission means to her.
