The Girls Inc. Washington Office seeks an intern with a desire to learn more about women’s issues and public policy. The beginning of the internship will focus on the planning of National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). On this day, Olympic athletes, coaches, and invited guests gather on Capitol Hill each year to lobby lawmakers and their staff about the value of sports and fitness for girls and women. After NGWSD, the intern will also participate in the planning of other advocacy and educational events on Capitol Hill. Working in a small office, the intern will have many opportunities to observe and participate in substantive work. This position is unpaid, but a stipend is available.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Scheduling NGWSD legislative visits and preparing lobbying materials
- Advocating to Members of Congress and staffers during NGWSD
- Conducting follow-up regarding NGWSD lobbying visits
- Researching federal legislation and writing memos and policy papers
- Attending hearings and meetings with coalition members
- Communicating with Girls Inc. affiliates about legislative programs
- Administrative tasks including copying, answering phones, and opening mail
Qualifications:
Applicants should be undergraduate or graduate students with a focus in government, political science, women’s studies, or other liberal arts subject areas. Knowledge of the federal legislative process a plus, but is not required. Full-time preferred, but a part-time schedule is possible.
Position Requirements include:
- Self-starter who works successfully with little supervision or instruction
- Experience with planning events and knowledge of the federal legislative process
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel and Internet research tools
