JAMES ATKIN ADVOCACY - located in Washington, DC
The Advocacy Intern responds to all telephone, mail and e-mail requests for information related to Title IX, the Amateur Sports Act and other gender equity situations in women's sports. Daily interaction with parents, coaches and athletes confronting gender discrimination makes this experience both exciting and rewarding. Responses require familiarity with gender equity educational resources, and familiarity with Foundation listings of referral attorneys and agencies. Independent advocacy projects include preparing articles for the Foundation's newsletter, development of correspondence to encourage schools and organizations to comply with various laws, researching gender equity topics and producing monthly advocacy reports.

ATHLETE MARKETING & PROMOTIONS
The Athlete Marketing & Promotions department communicates regularly with elite, world-class champion, and Olympic athletes. In the Speaker Service division, interns work to fulfill speaking requests. The Athlete Relations division deals with all athlete-related activities, which includes responding to special athlete requests. The interns will also be responsible for updating athlete information, correspondence with athletes (i.e., congratulations, etc.), and keeping updated on up-and-coming champions. In the Events and Promotions division, the interns work closely with the department supervisor in coordinating the attendance of champion female athletes to events as well as event logistics. All interns would be involved in some way with our two major Foundation events (Salute to Women in Sports Awards Dinner and The Billies) as well as other athlete events that are scheduled throughout the year, including Foundation game nights and fundraising events.

EDUCATION/PROGRAMS
Education interns work on projects related to the educational mission of the Foundation. These include design and management of public interest research studies, development of new materials such as the award-winning GoGirlGo! educational curriculum, and updating women's sports and physical activity statistics for print and web publications. The Education intern will have the opportunity to write and edit materials, plan for and represent the Foundation at events and work directly with the Chief Program Officer. Projects require a working knowledge of computers including database management, word processing, good research, writing, and communication and organizational skills.

FUNDRAISING & EXTERNAL RELATIONS
Interns in this area will be involved in all aspects of fundraising for non-profits. This includes direct mail projects, donor mailings, solicitation of funds for projects and programs, and special events. Interns assist in expanding and enhancing the Foundations donor relationships including work on cultivation efforts, distributing resources, sending timely information and thank you gifts, maintaining files, and conducting research via the web on prospective funding sources. Additionally, interns are involved with Foundation events (Salute to Women in Sports Dinner, NGWSD, Basketball Classic) to both raise funds and educate donors of our work. Development interns must have good knowledge of database management, word processing, writing skills, initiative, professional communication skills, and a desire to learn about fundraising.

DAVID FOSTER MARKETING/CORPORATE RELATIONS INTERNSHIP - located in Manhattan, NY
Interns in the Marketing/Corporate Relations department will assist in the cultivation and maintenance of the Foundation's corporate partner relationships, and engage in the development of marketing and branding strategies to build public awareness for the Foundation and its mission. Additionally, interns will assist in 1) the development of beneficiary and licensing relationships, 2) marketing of fundraising galas, grassroots events, grants, awards and research and 3) product promotion and cause marketing. Responsibilities include corporate correspondence, preparation of sponsorship proposals, event planning, database reporting, licensed merchandise distribution, file maintenance, corporate membership fulfillment and internet research.

ONLINE MEDIA
The Online Media intern position offers a unique opportunity for applicants interested in journalism, communications, creative writing, multimedia creation, online marketing, web design, women's studies and beyond. Online Media interns spearhead and assist with projects across departments. Duties vary within the department and can include: writing original articles for high-traffic adult and youth sites, interviewing champion athletes and other influential members of the women's sports community, creating Foundation e-newsletter (circulation 12,000), updating the site, recording and editing audio and video, managing linking relationships with web partners, creating graphics, finding and formatting photos, responding to e-mails sent to GoGirlWorld.org's advice columnist, “The Sports Diva,” and posting women's sports news. Experience with computer programming and graphic design is NOT required. However, a creative mind, attention to detail, ability to write effectively, interest in learning about the internet and passion for women's sport is a MUST.

PROGRAM MANAGEMENT
Program management administers all of the Women's Sports Foundation grant, scholarship, award and community programs. Administering programs involves grassroots promotion, cultivating relationships with national and local sports organizations, providing assistance to local community groups interested in celebrating female sports participation and researching the careers of accomplished national and international female athletes and coaches. Responsibilities include processing applications, research, reviewing and selecting grantees, coordinating award presentations, writing articles about Foundation programs for publication and communicating with a diverse constituency of individuals and organizations in sports and education. Individuals interested in working with this department should have excellent organization and communication skills (oral and written), an interest in program management and solid computer skills.

PUBLIC RELATIONS/COMMUNICATIONS - located in Manhattan, NY
The Public Relations department is responsible for proactively promoting the Foundation's mission, programs, events and corporate initiatives through internal and external media outlets. Such outlets include print publications, radio, television, the Internet and wire services. To carry out its responsibilities, the department must maintain a high level of communication with internal departments and foster a strong relationship with members of the media. Public Relations interns will support the department's goals by: writing press releases on Foundation programs, events, corporate initiatives and special projects; pitching media with story ideas on Foundation initiatives; answering media requests for information; scheduling media interviews for Foundation staff and officers; contributing articles to internal print and electronic publications; tracking media clips about Foundation programs, corporate initiatives and sponsor relationships; and maintain the online media center.

PUBLICATIONS/COMMUNICATIONS
The Publications intern is responsible for producing the Foundation's youth membership newsletter, as well as assisting with the Foundation's other publications. Primary duties include writing feature articles, researching, gathering photos, editing text and possibly designing and laying out pages for other printed materials. The Publications intern must be able to handle several projects at once and will have the opportunity to work with various Foundation departments. The Publications intern must have strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as strong word processing skills. Page layout/desktop publishing experience is preferred. The ability to think creatively is a plus.

SPECIAL EVENTS
The Special Events department is responsible for assisting in managing the following 4 major programs: 1) The Billies, held in Los Angeles, CA in spring, the newest of the Foundation's properties which began in 2006, 2) the Annual Salute to Women in Sports Awards Dinner held in mid-October in New York City, 3) The GoGirlGo! Challenge Event Series – a grassroots event series in various communities 4) Foundation beneficiary and donor hosted events and programs. Special Events interns administer and are responsible for numerous activities related to these four events such as: planning GoGirlGo! game nights, developing event fact sheets; maintaining registration records; preparing signage needs; updating events information on Foundation web site; working with hotels; managing volunteers at events; maintaining the events playbook; running the online and live & silent auction and supervising selected activities once we are on-site at the event. The Special Events interns are encouraged to identify projects of interest to them and to take ownership of that activity.
