The Women’s Sports Foundation
Carol Mann Golf for Girls Endowment
Program Overview:
The Women's Sports Foundation created the Grants for Girls Program in 1991 to help reduce the dropout rate in women’s sports, which is particularly high among girls ages nine to 18. Educational initiatives of the Foundation offer the parents, peers and teachers resources and information to encourage girls in sport. Increasing the opportunities for girls to play sports is a critical element of giving girls the chance to experience sports. With the Grants for Girls program, funding helps to create and sustain girls’ sports programs and seeks to provide the opportunity for participation in athletic activities for girls who might otherwise not be able to take part in those activities. Specifically, with the Carol Mann Grants for Girls Golf Endowment, funds will be available for girl’s golf programs.
Background:
Carol Mann was the second President of the Foundation and served from 1985-1989. She currently serves as a member of the Board of Stewards. As a Hall of Fame golfer and a winner of 38 tournaments on the LPGA tour from 1961-1981, Carol is a great role model for aspiring young golfers. The Carol Mann Grants for Girls Golf Endowment will allow the legacy of Carol’s passion for success and equity in golf to continue in perpetuity.
Eligibility:
Girls’ sports golf programs that are part of schools, national governing bodies, youth-serving agencies and other groups such as community teams, clubs, camps and outdoor programs that serve girls ages 9-18 are eligible to apply. Programs can propose to use funds from this grant program for equipment, uniforms and facility rental. Funding cannot be used for staffing, coaching or travel to competition.
Amount of Grant:
There is no specified number of grants. The total annual amount awarded will generally be between $1,000 and $3,000 per year in the form of $1000.00 grants. The number of grants will depend upon interest and gains in any given year. It is proposed that in 1999, a grant be awarded in July at the Foundation’s annual golf outing to a local girl’s golf program.
